Kent Lauer

Kent Lauer is a glass artist who has worked with the material for more then 30 years. His fascination of glass became his career. He creates jewellery, sculptures and window glass.
The reason I am interested in Lauer is due to his dichroic works which inspire my project. Lauer’s work is one of a kind and his work is pleasant to the eye.
I personally feel that Lauer’s dichroic sculptures give the same impression as fire- you’re instantly drawn at it.

Large dichroic glass sculpture

  dichroic2

This is one of the pieces of work I adore; it is made from 11 layers of glass, 6 layers of 3/4″ star fire and 5 layers of thin dichroic glass. It creates a rainbow of different colours which bounce off one another, to create different colours Lauer didn’t use or intend for to happen. Every angle the work is viewed at the colours change, this piece won 2 awards in 2006, 1st place popular vote at Glass Craft and Bead Expo in Las Vegas, and 1st place at Coatings by Sandberg dichroic glass art contest in Orange, CA. It is Lauer’s favourite sculpture so far. I think this piece would look great at large scale with artificial lighting to project the mix of colours around a room or even as a large scale piece in a public outdoor area as the natural lighting would reflect the colour during the day and the artificial lighting would reflect the colour at night time. I also think this would be effective as a lamp design for a home, bar or club.

Circular dichroic glass sculpture

This is also a favourite piece of mine, I love how all the colours blend to create a smoother effect compared to that of the large dichroic sculpture. It is composed of 7 layers of glass, 4 layers of 3/4″ starfire, and 3 layers of thin Dichroic. It is also a rather small piece at 5 by 3 inches. This art work reminds me of long exposure photographs especially ones of traffic at night time, due to the lines of several colours which intertwine with each other.

This work is a lot more simplified to that of the other works Lauer has created; it’s similar to what Lauer teaches in his glass sculpture classes. It’s made from two layers of 3/4″ starfire glass, and a thin layer of CBS dichroic glass laminated in between. It almost looks 4D due to the colour showing more in the centre of the piece rather than the whole work. It gives a sense of depth in the middle which creates this ‘pool’ of colour which only reflects slightly to the outer area of glass. It reminds me of a diamond due to the sharp, crisp cuts that have been sculpted into the work. I don’t find this work as attractive as Lauer’s other work, due to the work being a simplified design compared to that of the other works which I love.                 boo#
